Another Dominica

This new website is a personal perspective of my island home. It’s also where I post images of my sketching journey (they are all for sale, by the way). Although my focus has shifted (see The Wistful Nomad), independent travellers who may be familiar with my work will still find subjects of interest, I believe.

I’m happy for people to get in touch and will do my best to reply, though do bear in mind I don’t keep myself up to date with trail conditions and so on anymore. Those days are over, I’m afraid.

In the coffee grove this morning I saw blossom appearing. My trees grow at 2,000 feet, so all the recent cold mountain air and heavy rains have caused everything to develop a little more slowly than usual.

Beyond the restored buildings of Fort Shirley and

Beyond the restored buildings of Fort Shirley and all that (non) jazz, there are some of Dominica's most enigmatic and historic forest paths. I love to walk the East Cabrit and Douglas Bay Battery trails, forming a loop back to the fort. Trees, vines and garrison ruins exist in undisturbed entanglement in a maze of interconnected tracks running through and around a fortification of what was once over 50 buildings covering around 80 hectares of the Cabrits National Park. Where once troops marched back and forth, there's now a dry forest habitat that's home to interesting trees such as silk cotton, bay, savonnet, and the rather special bursera simaruba. Yesterday afternoon, we were also lucky enough to see a kouwes snake while an elusive mangrove cuckoo called from somewhere out of sight.
